Where a Level 5 actually earns its cost
Not every wall needs one. Level 4 is the right call for most painted walls with an eggshell or matte sheen and ordinary lighting — specifying Level 5 there is money spent on a difference nobody will see.
It earns its cost where light is critical or sheen is high: glazed walls and window returns, open-plan rooms with wide daylight, gloss and semi-gloss paint, dark saturated colours, and any wall a downlight grazes. Those conditions turn a fastener dimple into a shadow, and no amount of paint will bury it.
What the scope covers
- 01 Full-surface skim over the whole wall or ceiling plane, not just taped joints
- 02 Fastener spotting and bead work brought flush before the skim goes on
- 03 Existing textured walls flattened back — orange peel and knockdown skimmed smooth
- 04 Sanded, dusted and checked under a work light before it is called finished
How the coats go on
Compound shrinks as it dries. That single fact sets the coat count, the order and the timing — rushing a coat onto one that has not gone off is how a joint telegraphs back through three months later.
Tape & fill
Joints taped and filled, fasteners spotted, beads set. This is the Level 4 substrate — the skim is only ever as flat as what is under it.
Skim
A thin coat pulled across the entire surface, edge to edge, so joint compound and paper face take paint the same way.
Cut & light
Sanded flat, then read under a raking light from the angle the room will actually be lit. Anything that shadows gets another pass.
Priced from drawings as readily as from a walkthrough. Send a set over.
