Orange peel, knockdown and skip trowel applied new, or matched into an existing surface so the patched area stops being findable. Texture matching is a sampling problem before it is a spraying problem.

Why matched texture is mostly sampling

Texture is not one setting. The pattern depends on mud consistency, tip size, air pressure, distance, and how long the knockdown sits before it is flattened — and the wall you are matching was sprayed by someone else, years ago, with their own version of all five.

So we sample. Scrap board, several passes at different settings, held up against the existing wall under that room’s own light until one of them disappears. Then that setting goes on the wall. Skipping the sampling step is why most patch repairs stay visible.
